About the Event

The Coastal Resilience Short Course Level II: Advanced Applications will be held from 27–29 August 2025, combining expert-led sessions with a comprehensive field study of the Tweed–Byron Coast. Tailored for experienced practitioners, including alumni of the Coastal Hazard Management Short Course (2013–2018) and participants of Level I (2019–2025), this advanced-level program provides a unique opportunity to deepen understanding of coastal risk, resilience, and adaptive management. The course will be based at the Byron Bay Surf Lifesaving Club, a fitting venue situated in one of Australia’s most dynamic coastal regions. The program features a full-day study tour on 28 August, offering first-hand insights into the physical, ecological, and social dimensions of coastal resilience.  Participants will engage directly with local experts, site managers, and council officers to examine real-world responses to erosion, development pressures, and climate-related impacts. In addition to technical presentations and field-based discussions, the course includes a hands-on group workshop. This structured, practical session allows participants to collaboratively work through real-world coastal resilience case studies, applying innovative thinking and strategic tools to assess challenges, identify key stakeholders, map out responses, and propose actionable solutions. The course also fosters peer-to-peer learning and professional networking, drawing on diverse experiences from across government, consultancy, and academia. With a strong emphasis on practical application, this program equips attendees with the latest strategies and insights to lead coastal resilience initiatives in their own regions—supported by the backdrop of a landscape at the forefront of coastal innovation and challenge. For online participants, a Microsoft Teams link will be provided ahead of the course, allowing live access to all seminar-style presentations and technical sessions. Participants will be able to follow the content in real time, ask questions via the chat function, and receive all supporting materials digitally. Please note that the study tour and group workshop components are only available to in-person attendees and are not included in the online program. View the full course program
